I’m John Dowling. For more than 40 years I’ve been creating art — first as a fine art and photojournalist for 35 years, and today as a full-time fine artist working in abstraction. When the 2008 financial crisis sent global equities down 50%, contemporary art suffered a far milder correction and rebounded faster, recovering by 2010. In 2022, the global art market reached $67.8 billion in sales, with contemporary work — largely from emerging artists — accounting for 55% of auction turnover.

Now compare that with the bank. The average U.S. savings account pays somewhere between 0.5% and 4% a year. A $50,000 deposit in a high-yield account earning 4% grows to about $60,832 after five years — a gain of $10,832. The same $50,000 invested in one of my paintings, appreciating at the conservative 15% annual rate my work has historically shown, would approach $100,568 — a gain of more than $50,000.

Art is a tangible asset: non-correlated to traditional markets, resilient against inflation, portable, and inexpensive to maintain. It doesn’t vanish when a stock chart dips. And unlike a bank balance, it pays you something no financial product can — daily emotional and aesthetic return. You live with it. It inspires you. It becomes part of your home, your office, your legacy.

Why Collectors Are Investing in My Work

What makes my market unusual isn’t simply that I’m selling work — it’s the velocity and the level at which it is forming. In the very earliest stages of exhibiting in New York and Hamptons art circles, my pieces were already commanding six-figure prices: $100,000 to $250,000. That is almost unheard of for an artist at the beginning of public market exposure.
